Betting tips

In order to help yourself make money or a profit from sports betting there are a couple of basic strategies or tips you will want to understand and follow. None of these sports betting tips are secrets by any means, but following them will help you win money betting on sports.

#1 Money Management/Bankroll Management
When you are betting on sports you should always set aside a certain amount of money, which we refer to as your “bankroll”, in which you can afford to lose. Like with any type of gambling, you never want to bet betting on sports with money you cannot afford to lose. Set aside a certain amount of money that you can use for your bankroll for the week, the month, or the season. A general sports betting strategy for money management is to only make bets with 1%-5% of your bankroll.

#2 Do NOT let emotions take over, which often leads to bad decisions.
Most people place wagers on the sports that they enjoy watching the most, and it is natural that they have their favorite teams and players. They obviously like to see those teams and players do well, and this can easily influence their selections if they are NOT careful. It is very common for people to bet on what they WANT to happen, without really considering whether that is the right thing to do or NOT.

#3 Do Your Homework – Most Important Tip
This is maybe the most important sports betting tip. You will always want to do your research before placing your bets.

#4 Line Shopping
A very big step to becoming a winning sports bettor is to make sure you are shopping for the best lines. What this means is that you will have to have an account at a couple of different online sports books and when you are ready to make a bet on a certain team or outcome you check the different sports books and find which book is offering the best line for you.

#5 Avoid Buying Points
Avoid falling into “newby” tendency such as buying favorites down or underdogs up. For example, some bettors always feel the need to buy an NFL favorite of -3.5 down to -2.5. The sports books are smart enough to charge more juice to do this, mathematically making it a bad strategy.

#6 Understand the Concept of VALUE
Value is a term that gets used a lot in relation to sports betting, but it’s something that a lot of bettors don’t really understand. The concept is reasonably straightforward, as value basically just measures the relationship between the odds of a selection and the probability of the associated outcome happening. When the odds are higher than they technically “should” be based on the relevant probability, a selection is said to have positive expected value.

#7 Be Selective
It is important to be selective. Placing too many wagers can be just as damaging as staking too much money, as this is also likely to lead to losing money more quickly. It’s hard to consistently make sensible selections when placing lots of wagers, so it’s much better to concentrate on trying to find genuinely good opportunities.

#8 Keep Records of YOUR Selections
Very few beginners bother to keep records of their sports betting. This is a mistake, for two reasons. First, without any records it’s hard to keep track of how much is being spent. And, as we explained earlier, it’s very important to monitor spending and stick to a budget. Second, keeping records enables you to study those records periodically and look for ways to improve. This is vital when the long-term aim is to make a profit.

#9 Join a Betting Forum
Read the articles on this site and how much useful information and advice it contains. You can definitely learn a lot by studying them, but it should NOT be the only resource you use. There are lots of other ways to expand your knowledge too, like joining a betting forum. Just reading discussions between other bettors can be very enlightening, and actually engaging in those discussions is even more useful.

#10 Take Regular Breaks
Finally, sports betting should always be fun to some extent, even if your ultimate goal is to make money. Avoid sports betting becoming more of a chore than a choice by taking regular breaks. Do NOT place a bet the first 30 days of each season, for example. This will help to keep it enjoyable, and coming back with fresh perspective can help with making good decisions too

Above are, in my opinion, basic tips you will want to follow in order to become a winning sports bettor, but there are a couple of other tips you can use to help you win money.

For one, you can try following a sports handicapper, like myself, who is using a proven sports betting system.
